Bonus Rounds
Scattered across Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure are hidden rainbow circles that transport Buster Bunny into colorful bonus rounds. These secret areas are filled with carrots, extra lives, and chances to rack up points. In total, the game contains seven unique bonus rounds, though many players only stumble upon a few of them in a normal playthrough.
The first bonus round can be accessed at the end of Level 3 - the alternate version, not the standard path. To reach this level, head to Plains Level 2. Look for an opening in the wall near a patch of quicksand with spikes at the bottom. Enter the tunnel and follow it until you reach a hole. Drop down, and you'll encounter Gogo. When you touch him, you'll be given a choice between the regular third level and a different third level. Choose the alternate path - at the end of that level you'll find the first rainbow portal.
🧐 Fun Facts about Buster's Hidden Treasure
- Not released in Japan: Despite being developed by Konami, this game was never released in Japan - it came out only in North America and Europe.
- Completely original storyline: Unlike many licensed games of the era, Buster's Hidden Treasure doesn't directly follow any episode of the animated series. The story and levels were created specifically for the game.
- Unused animations: The game's files include several unused animation frames, including alternate idle poses for Buster and even some scrapped enemy movements - a common trait in many 16-bit games.
- Multiple Alternate Levels: Buster's Hidden Treasure features several alternate versions of levels that branch off from the main path. By finding Gogo in secret locations, you can choose between different stage variations. This branching structure adds replayability and a sense of discovery.
- Same composer as Castlevania: The music was composed by Masanori Adachi and other Konami veterans who worked on titles like Castlevania and Rocket Knight Adventures. That's why even a cartoon game like this has some surprisingly catchy and complex tunes.
- Tiny Toon boss fights: Some familiar characters, like Dizzy Devil and Plucky Duck, appear as bosses - but don't worry, they're under mind control and will return to normal after you defeat them.
🌍 Level Design & Environments
One of the standout features of Tiny Toon Adventures is its colorful and varied level design. From lush green hills to dark underground tunnels, the game offers a wide range of environments that keep the experience fresh as you progress. Each stage is crafted with care, blending classic platforming elements with creative layouts and hidden surprises.
The adventure begins in the rolling plains, with bright skies, grassy hills, and hidden tunnels. As you continue, you'll explore dense forests, slippery ice caverns, sandy beaches, and even underwater ruins. Every area introduces new hazards - such as collapsing platforms, spike pits, and moving ledges - that test your timing and reflexes. Water levels, in particular, shift the pace of the game, requiring more careful navigation and offering a change from the faster ground-based stages.
The game's platforming sections are rich with verticality, offering multiple paths, springboards, and wall-jump opportunities that encourage exploration. Secret areas are tucked away behind destructible walls or off-screen ledges, and reaching them often leads to extra lives, stars, or even shortcuts to bonus levels.
In addition to the main path, many levels feature alternate exits or branching routes. A good example is the second plains level, which leads to a hidden version of level 3 if you discover the right passage and meet Gogo. These branching paths give players reasons to revisit stages and try different approaches.
The backgrounds and environments are also filled with visual flair - swaying trees, rippling water, and animated wildlife help make the world feel alive. Combined with the catchy soundtrack, the variety in scenery gives each stage its own personality and atmosphere.
Whether you're hopping across icebergs or leaping through tree canopies, the environmental diversity keeps the game engaging from start to finish. It's a great example of how thoughtful level design can bring a cartoon world to life in a way that feels interactive, fun, and rewarding to explore.
